Something not working with Affine inside ChatGPT, Claude or Microsoft 365 Copilot? Start with the three checks below — they solve most cases. If you are setting the connection up for the first time, follow the setup guide first.
- Set up the connectionStep-by-step setup for ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- Fix a problemThe nine symptoms we see most often, and what to do about each.
- Decode a messageWhat your assistant means when it says it can't do something.
- Talk to a personNothing here matching? Write to us with a few details and we will dig in.
1Start here: three quick checks
- Have you finished setting up your Affine account?Sign in at affine.neuralshift.ai and make sure you have completed the setup steps, including choosing your jurisdictions. This is the single most common cause.
- Are you signed in with the right account? The connection uses your Affine login. If you have more than one work account, make sure the connector is signed in with the one that has Affine.
- Is Affine switched on in this conversation? In Claude you may need to enable Affine in the tools menu next to the message box. In ChatGPT and Microsoft 365 Copilot you can simply type @Affine in your message. Some settings apply only to new conversations — starting a fresh one is a good first move.
2Common problems
Every entry below has its own link, so we can point you straight at the one that matches what you are seeing.
My assistant doesn't seem to have Affine at all
It answers, but never mentions Affine, or says it has no access to it.
- Check that the connector is listed and connected in your assistant's Connectors (or Apps) settings, and switched on for the conversation.
- Start a new conversation — a connector added mid-chat is often not picked up.
- If it lists the connection but shows no tools, the sign-in did not complete — see Sign-in doesn't complete below. Every connected user sees the same five tools; a partial list is not something your plan can cause.
It answers, but from general knowledge — no Affine sources
This is common; some AI systems tend to prefer a web search.
- In ChatGPT and Microsoft 365 Copilot, type @Affine in your message and pick it from the list. This is the most reliable fix.
- In Claude, check that Affine is switched on in the tools menu next to the message box, and start with “Using Affine, …”.
- Ask directly: “Search Affine and cite the articles you used.”
- If the answer has no citations to legal documents, treat it as unverified.
ChatGPT gives me no way to add the connection
The option to add a connection manually only appears once developer mode is on, and it is off by default.
- Open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode. The option to create a connection appears afterwards.
- If there is no developer mode setting at all, your ChatGPT plan or your organisation's settings do not allow custom connections. Check with your provider or your IT team.
Sign-in doesn't complete
The sign-in window opens but never finishes, or loops back.
- Allow pop-ups for your assistant's site and try again.
- If your browser blocks third-party cookies, allow them for the sign-in, or try a different browser.
- If your organisation uses Microsoft accounts, choose Sign in with Microsoft rather than typing a password.
- Make sure you are using your work email — the one your Affine account was created with.
- Still stuck? Remove the connector, add it again with
https://mcp.affine.neuralshift.ai/mcp, and sign in once more.
A researched answer is taking a long time
That is expected. A full research pass searches, opens and cross-checks several documents before writing, and can take a few minutes.
- Let it finish. Resending the question gains you nothing — at most it cancels the research already under way.
- If it never returns, ask the same question again once. If it fails a second time, contact us.
Affine can't find a document I know exists
- Give the assistant more to go on: the official name, the number and the year, or a distinctive phrase from the text.
- Say the jurisdiction if it is not your usual one.
- Check the source is one Affine covers — see the source list. Coverage differs by source, and very recent publications may not be there yet.
- Affine covers the law as it stands today. Documents that are no longer in force, and earlier versions of a consolidated document, are not reachable yet — so a repealed article or the wording as it read a few years ago won't come back.
- If it is one of your own private documents, it is not reachable this way by design. Use the Affine app.
The answer is about the wrong country
Affine follows the jurisdictions on your account.
- Say the jurisdiction in your message: “under Spanish law”, “in Portugal”, “under EU law”.
- To change your default, open Settings → Jurisdiction in the Affine app, then start a new conversation.
Microsoft 365 Copilot doesn't list Affine
Affine has to be made available by your organisation. Ask your IT administrator to add the Affine agent for your account, or write to us and we will help them through it.
3Messages you might see
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “You haven't finished setting up your account” / “complete the onboarding process, including selecting your jurisdictions” | Your Affine account was never fully set up. | Sign in at affine.neuralshift.ai, finish the setup and choose your jurisdictions. Then start a new conversation. |
| “Account not active. Contact support.” | Your Affine account is not active. | Write to general@neuralshift.ai. |
| “…has reached the call limit for ‘read_document’ this period or doesn't have access to it” | You have used up the allowance for that one tool this period. Other tools are unaffected. | Try again in the next period, or write to general@neuralshift.ai to have the limit raised. |
| “Document ‘…’ not found or not accessible” | The document reference was wrong, or it is not a public source Affine covers. | Ask the question again so the assistant looks the document up afresh. Private documents are never reachable this way. |
| “Unknown tool” | The assistant tried a tool that no longer exists — usually from an old conversation. | Start a new conversation. |
4Good to know
- Affine reaches public legal sources only. Private documents, uploads, projects and audio transcripts don't work in the MCP connection — use the Affine app for those.
- Your assistant can't act for you. It cannot send emails, save files or edit documents through Affine.
- Always check the citations before relying on an answer. Affine grounds answers in real documents, but the final legal judgement is yours.
- Everyone gets the same five tools. The list does not change with your plan, your jurisdictions or your role — see the tools your assistant gets.
5Still stuck?
Write to general@neuralshift.ai and a person will take it from there.
What to include
- Which assistant you were using (ChatGPT, Claude or Microsoft 365 Copilot).
- The email address of your Affine account.
- Roughly when it happened (date and time).
- The question you asked, and what the assistant replied — a screenshot is ideal.
- Anything you already tried from this page.
